| On Saturday, February 11, the Albany location of the American Martial Arts Institute participated in Clear Channel Communications’s Family Activity Day at the Latham Circle Mall. Activities for children of all ages were showcased throughout the day through both demonstrations and informational displays and booths. Master Allen Hillicoss, proprietor of the Albany location, was assisted by staff of the American Martial Arts Institute who spent the day speaking with parents and children and handing out information about the school. Eighteen students, ranging from superkick students (3-5 year olds) to 1st degree black belt, performed in an hour long demonstration which was both exciting and informative. Master Hillicoss opened the demonstration by providing some information about our school and style. Students stretched and then executed punches, kicks, and basic forms. Many of the students then demonstrated their katas, both individually and in groups. After performing, the students had the opportunity to watch the black belt instructors demonstrate a wide variety of skills. Mr. Santiago performed the traditional Chinese kata Sil Lum, and then it was time for self-defense. Master Hillicoss explained several of the basic principles of self-defense as Dr. Howard grabbed him in a variety of ways – and found himself being restrained or thrown in an even greater variety of ways. Master Hillicoss emphasized that self-defense was not meant to hurt others, only to make certain that you did not get hurt, and while there are many techniques, the best self-defense is awareness. After the self-defense demonstration, several of the students returned to the floor and broke boards with both hand and foot techniques. Miss Möller demonstrated the power of the mind by having two patio blocks smashed on her solar plexus while she meditated lying on a bed of nails. Master Hillicoss brought the breaking to a grand finale by walking barefoot across a tray of broken glass, pausing in the middle to turn and smash two stacks of patio blocks with a double palm strike. The demonstration was fun and educational for everyone, including the students participating and the many spectators. It was a great day spent sharing our school and style with many parents and children attending the Family Activity Day.
