Spring Break Funshop
April 16 - 20 of 2001

This program offered supervision, safety, stimulation, activities and fun for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 17 who were members of the American Martial Arts Institute. The program went from 8:30 to 5:00 each day of the week during the week schools were closed for Easter vacation.

The program was presented and instructed by Clifford C. Crandall and the staff of the American Martial Arts Institute with assistance from Junior Rank Black Belt Red Tops. This program was designed by Grand Master Crandall, who is known for his child safety segments on T.V. and through his internationally distributed instructional videotapes and books on martial arts and self-defense. With Grand Master Crandall's educational background, this spring break program was much more than child supervision. There was a main topic of study for each morning and each afternoon. Around these main classes there were small classes on special topics. Classes this year included tumbling, kicks, basic forms, katas, sparring, bag work, take downs, self-defense (empty hand), self-defense (guns and knives), martial arts manners, a general weapons class (covering a little about each tool the school uses), history class on the martial arts in general and the American Martial Arts school specifically, chess, drawing, plus two martial arts movies and reading regarding different styles of martial arts. In between these classes, time existed for students to socialize and interact.

The students that participated in this educational martial arts program this year were:

Anastasja Abraham, age 7, rank purple
Michael Bartkowiak, age 6, rank orange
Jeremy Cellini, age 11, rank green
Kayla Dingle, age 14, rank green

The students drew twelve pictures over the five-day Funshop. The purpose was to see oneself in a form or move and see the detail, making sure the face had all of the parts such as ears, eyebrows, hair and lips.

Classes in tumbling and gymnastics were fun and enhanced small and large muscle skills.

-
Over one-hundred books were available for individual reading and for those who wanted, martial arts stories were read to them.

Everyone learned to play chess.

-
Everyone learned blocks and counters plus cirular self-defense.

-
Classes involved ideas and points of view from everyone. Time was taken to discuss the drawings and what the drawings represented.

The movies and videotapes were instructional and entertaining.

The final chess game of the tournament became a head-to-head between Zachary Keep and Jeremy Cellini.

The next Funshop is planned for the February school break with registration due in by January 15, 2002.
