Albany Superkick Summer Fun Day
August 5, 2000

The Albany location held a Superkick Summer Fun Day on Saturday, August 5. Current and past students from the Superkick classes, both at our martial arts school location and at the Albany Jewish Community Center were invited to the hour-long program in recognition of the super job they had done. Students from the kids classes were invited as special guests, and several students from the adult class observed and assisted with the afternoon's events.

The program began with Master Allen Hillicoss introducing the instructors and preparing to do a board break. During his introduction, our special guest Mr. Ninja made a suprise entrance and broke the boards. This was followed with a short Superkick class in which the students stretched and then executed punches and kicks. After their workout, the students sat down and enjoyed the presentation of two katas: Pal-Gwe One, performed by Orange Belt, Julia Korkosz, and the tonfa kata "Swirling Dragon", performed by black belt Junior Rank Assistant Instructor Tim Quigley.

Next the students watched a safety skit in which Black Belt instructor Mr. Don Brown pretended to be a stranger looking for a lost puppy. Students Katie Quigley and Ryan Wood responded correctly to this by refusing to go with him and instead going to tell an adult. Chief Instructor Miss Linda Moller then gave an exciting demonstration of self-defense skills in response to a variety of attacks and grabs from Mr. Ninja. The students then had the opportunity to perform circular arm break away under the guidance of Black Belt instructor Mr. Arturo Santiago, Mr. Mark Huth, and Dr. Jamie Howard.

Then it was time for more demonstrations, a powerful execution of a musical kata by Mr. Santiago, and then without success Mr. Ninja tried to become invisible. This was followed by two Superkick students doing their first board breaks. One needed more than one attempt to break his, reinforcing both the fact that the boards do not break by themselves and that sometimes persistence and perseverance are needed to achieve a goal. Finally, all of the students participated in a circuit training exercise which involved doing punches, kicks, and jump kicks at a variety of locations around the room.
