What is the Crandall System?
The Crandall System is an organized method for improving self-defense and awareness for all ages. It is not a martial arts style. The Crandall System’s goal is for you to gain the knowledge and the self-confidence that stems from that knowledge necessary to take control and feel safe physically and mentally in your daily life.
The Crandall System has four levels:
Level 1: Children’s Self-Defense and Awareness
Level 2: Teenager’s Self-Defense and Social Awareness
Level 3: Women’s Self-Defense and Assault Prevention
Level 4: Senior Citizen’s Self-Defense and Secure Living
Each level is intended for a specific audience in order to increase their awareness regarding the dangers that face them in their daily lives and provide them with effective solutions.
Who Created the Crandall System?
Grandmaster Clifford C. Crandall, Jr. is recognized internationally for his contributions to the field of martial arts and his safety awareness programs.
His educational experience as a superintendent of schools, elementary and high school principal, and classroom teacher, combined with his many years as a professional martial artist gave him the unique combination of knowledge and skills to develop the Crandall System, a program designed to increase personal security in daily life.
As founder of the American Martial Arts Institute, he is Grandmaster of American Eagle Style, a traditional empty-hand style of martial arts, and he is Headmaster for the world of Takenouchi-Hangan-Ryu-Matsuno-Crandall, a 300-yearold iadio style based on the samurai philosophy of life.
Grandmaster Crandall has authored three books and produced seven instructional videos, two of which have now been formatted into DVDs. One of these DVDs is Children’s Self-Defense and Awareness, Volume 1, a self-contained program of non-aggressive self-defense for educating school children (level one of the Crandall System). The Crandall System is also documented in the book Be Safe Physcially and Mentally with the Crandall System.
He has taught elementary through high school children self-defense with his Just Get Away program, presented his Women’s Self-Defense seminars for rape crisis centers, universities, and other private organizations, instructed college credit courses on self-defense, instructed and certified physical education teachers to implement a K-12 self-defense curriculum to meet state required safety standards, and designed safety programs for senior citizens.
Grandmaster Crandall produced and hosted the Martial Arts Today Show for twelve years, which aired on NBC to over eight million homes in the U.S. and Canada. For over twenty years, he has raised public awareness regarding safety with his Secure Living television public service announcements, by serving as the Central New York spokesperson for McDonald’s in safety commercials, and with his television show Safety and Awareness Today that presented self-defense and safety topics for all ages on ABC, Fox, and MyTV.
In 1994, Grandmaster Crandall coached and led the first American martial arts team to perform in the People’s Republic of China, with letters of introduction from the President and Vice President of the United States at that time. He has also led similar delegations promoting good international relations to other countries including Russia, Japan, and Australia. In 2000, he was inducted into the International Hall of Fame for contribution to the martial arts by a Grandmaster. He also holds a Guinness Book World Record for breaking a board while skydiving, a feat performed in conjunction with a child safety awareness campaign. The Crandall System has been taught successfully fro many years in private and public schools and community organizations.
These are only a few of his contributions to safety and awareness education during his over 45 years as a martial artist and educator.

The educational philosophy of the Crandall System prioritizes awareness, responsible behavior, prevention, and verbalization before any physical action. However, it also recognizes that a physical response is sometimes required. As a parent, educator, or community member, it is important to understand that self-confidence is what makes the difference when taking a stand in a situation that could end up being very serious.
Children's Self-Defense and Awareness
This level of the Crandall System is intended to arm children up to the age of 12 with the knowledge and physical skills that will make their lives more secure. The number of children who are abducted each year is apalling. Many factors contribute to a child's vulnerability.
Some areas covered
by this program include:
Educational Objectives
Objectives for mental awareness and physical skills are clearly defined.
Principles for Building Self-Confidence
Four key principles that are consistent with the educational philosophy of the Crandall System are presented to assist parents, educators, and community members in teaching children self-confidence and self-defense.
Refusal Skills (Saying No)
The Crandall System is proactive. Arming children with refusal skills such as saying "no" to strangers is essential. This area also includes a much wider range of topics such as the identification of potential threats, an awareness of vulnerabilities, and how to find help when lost.
"Ten Tips for Tots"
This list of ten suggestions can make a positive difference in a child's daily safety.
Non-Agressive Escape Techniques
Sometimes physical action becomes necessary. Awareness and prevention can stop many assaults from ever occuring, but that will not stop all attempts at an abduction. This part of the program teaches children physical skills.
The physical program improves small and large motor coordination, balance, and strength, but the primary focus is on its non-agressive escape techniques. These are physical responses to common grabs that allow a child to escape and seek help. They are designed only to allow the child to escape, and, therefore, cannot be used to bully another child.

Teenager's Self-Defense and Social Awareness
The need for safety and awareness is important for people of all ages. Teenagers and adults have more independence than children, which provides the opportunity to participate in such activities as driving a car, visiting a foreign country, or buying a home. However, that independence also introduces new areas of vulnerability. Awareness and proactive safety practices can make the difference in living a more secure life. Level two presents subject areas for young adults between 13 and 19 years old.

Socially Accpetable Responses
Peer pressure is one of the more complex topics that teenagers must confront in their daily lives, and conforming to negative peer pressure can put them in potentally dangerous situations. Socially acceptable responses defend a choice to be different (not conforming to peer pressure) in a manner that is logical and consistent with how many other people behave, even if they are not part of your group. These areas are discussed and suggestions for sociallly acceptable responses are offered.
Awareness Topics for Teenagers
Increased independence also increases vulnerabilities. Many of these potential threats are covered to arm teenagers with knowledge that may help them to make better decisions concerning their safety.
Escape Techiniques
Teenagers face the risk of being bullied or assaulted every day. These escape techniques allow the teenagers to get free and get away from these situations. Some techniques include escapes from wrist grabs, sleeve grabs, hair grabs (from the front and back), throat grabs, double-throat grabs, single lapel grabs, double-lapel grabs, choke holds, bear hugs, arms around the shoulder, and arms around the waist.
